Polarizer is the key raw material for panel manufacturing, and the cost accounts for about 10% of the total raw material cost of liquid crystal panel. It is reported that due to the impact of the COVID-19, the supply of polarizers will be in short supply throughout the second quarter. What is the relationship between supply and demand of polarizers in the short term due to the impact of the withdrawal of LGD and SDC from the liquid crystal Market? What opportunities and challenges will it bring to Chinese polarizer manufacturers?
Complex process and high technical threshold
Polarizer is an optical film material used to control the polarization direction of a specific beam. It is mainly composed of TAC film, PVA film, protective film, incremental film, pressure-sensitive adhesive, phase difference film and so on. The basic structure is two layers of TAC film, sandwiched with a layer of stretched PVA film. By adjusting the composition of different film materials, the requirements of high tolerance and different thickness of polarizer can be met.
Two linear polarizers need to be used in the LCD panel. The first polarizer changes the scattered light in the backlight module into linearly polarized light. The light passes through the liquid crystal layer to reverse the polarization direction, and then passes through the second linear polarizer to make the pixels have the effect of light and dark. A circular polarizer needs to be used in OLED, which is mainly used to block the reflected light of ITO electrode under strong light. It is composed of a polarizer combined with a quarter wave plate. The characteristics of this multilayer material composite lead to long process links and many raw materials in the production of polarizer. There are difficulties in raw materials, glue, bonding process and many other aspects in the production process, which is difficult to improve the yield. Therefore, it has a high technical threshold.
The upstream of polarizer products is PVA film, TAC film and other raw materials, the midstream is the production of polarizer, and the downstream is display panel, sunglasses, goggles, photographic equipment and other terminal products.
The raw material cost of polarizer accounts for more than 70% of the total cost, of which PVA film and TAC film account for about 56% and 16% of the material cost respectively, which are basically monopolized by Japanese manufacturers such as kololi, Fuji Photo, Konica Minolta and so on. Domestic manufacturers such as dongfluoroplastics, Xinlun technology, lucky group and wanwei high tech have certain raw material production capacity. Localization of upstream materials can effectively reduce the procurement cost of raw materials.
