Mi Yujie, deputy general manager of TSMC research and development, won the IEEE Frederik Philips award in 2022. In an interview with IEEE, he said that the first challenge of the semiconductor industry lies in the choice of technology; The second is to find enough talents. In addition, the shortage of semiconductors is still an obstacle that must be faced at present.
Mi Yujie pointed out that the shortage of semiconductors will take two to three years until the new wafer factory goes online. "At present, the semiconductor industry is investing a lot of money to build additional capacity to solve the chip shortage. Today, we have a much clearer understanding of future demand than two years ago." Mi Yujie said.
For the reason of semiconductor shortage, MI Yujie believes that the pandemic has disrupted the global economy, and the increasing popularity of electronic products in daily life has also led to a surge in semiconductor demand.

In addition, MI Yujie revealed that TSMC 3nm plans to go public later this year, and the company is also studying 2nm nodes. "We are approaching the atomic scale. In the past, we could fine tune the process to realize the next generation of nodes, but now each generation must find new methods in transistor architecture, materials, processes and tools."
